Packing Tips

Please consider the following tips when preparing to pack up the house.

There is an art to packing up our houses when we are ready to explore new opportunities. The biggest secret of all is having the correct materials to pack properly.

  • Wrapping Paper - You should have plenty of wrapping paper for all your dishes, pictures and anything else that could be considered fragile. Some people find it easier to use old newspaper to do this, but I would advise against that because newspaper ink never dries completely: do not risk getting Grandma's antique china ruined because of this.
  • Markers - Large red or black markers appear to work the best. As soon as you have you box packed, write on the top or side the contents and where you would like it placed in the new house.
  • Boxes - All sizes and in good shape. Most grocery stores do their stocking in the evening, consider calling or visiting your local grocery store early in the morning before they get rid of those boxes. Most grocery stores are more than happy to help you with plenty of boxes. Be careful not to accept boxes with food residue on them, only strong and dry boxes will do. If you have to purchase boxes, most movers and mail shipping places have them for sale.
  • 3 X 5 Cards - If you have already taped the boxes shut, sometimes the markers will not write very well on the tape, try using 3 X 5 Cards to mark the contents and then tape those to the top of the box. This can also make it very easy to read.
  • Tape - The ideal tape for moving boxes is the 2" clear tape that most department stores have. This is sometimes referred to as shipping tape. Depending on the number of boxes you are moving, you may want to consider starting with 2 - 3 rolls of tape.

Because this can be an extremely hectic time for you and your family, I would recommend getting your materials several weeks before you are ready to move. Doing as much as possible before the moving day will make for a smooth transition and a lot less stress on everyone!

As you are packing, remember that the heavier items should go into smaller boxes: too many heavy items in a large box would be overwhelming for most people.

Room-by-room packing will help to keep everything in the proper spot. Do not mix items that go in the kitchen with items that belong in the bathroom.

The more organization you put into packing, the easier it will be to setup and become familiar with your new home.
