Moving Checklist
Please feel free to use our checklist in helping you move. If you would like to download or print this checklist, we have made it available in pdf format here.
8 - 10 Weeks Before
- Gather and prepare all necessary forms for notifying your bank, doctor's offices, insurance agents, creditors, utilities, and of course family & friends.
- If required, contact moving companies for at least 3 quotes, carefully checking references, the value of quote, and what insurance is provided.
- Plan your meals to use up remaining frozen food items so you can move fewer items.
- Remove all unnecessary items allowing you to plan and prepare more efficiently.
5 - 6 Weeks Before
- Contact Moving company to plan dates/time.
- Consider either donating or having a moving sale to get rid of those items not moving with you.
- Check all forgotten areas for items you might miss, such as closets, attic and garage.
- Prepare forms and/or change of address requests for everyone listed above and submit prior to moving.
- Inquire about medical professionals that are available in your new area. Consider asking your current doctor for a recommendation.
- Make sure your tax advisor and/or accountant is aware of your moving information in order to maximize your tax deductions relating to the selling/buying of your home.
4 Weeks Before
- Inquire about refunds for all unused services such as homeowner's insurance, prepaid utilities, and security deposits, or request a credit to be applied for the new services.
- Setup final readings on all utilities and request disconnects for old services if applicable (Check with Kathy regarding the final water reading).
- Group all important documents together making preparations to ensure that they travel safely and securely.
- Prepare house for cleaning and/or repairs as necessary to make an easy sale process.
3 Weeks Before
- Consider child care for children younger than 8, allowing your move to progress smoothly.
- Arrange travel plans for your family, possibly spending a night in a hotel allowing for the family to get rest before moving everything into the new home.
2 Weeks Before
- If applicable, make sure that pets have a place to stay during the transition.
- Depending on distance, you may want to make sure all vehicles are properly maintained.
- Double-check all change of address notices have been mailed.
1 Week Before
- Review arrangements with the moving company and friends & family if assisting.
